Stats Legio Arctos Stats

Formed on October 1st, 2012 by two best friends, Legio Arctos has always been focused on small scale operations. Their official playstyle is guerrilla warfare, but that can often mean the use of small flexible teams to achieve various objectives. Lightning raids, hot drops, shock troops, cavalry, stealth, and subterfuge are the main skills of, what its members fondly call, the Legion. Legio Arctos is Latin for Bear Legion or Legion of Bears. This symbolism of this comes from the nature of bears. They are solitary beasts, though madly loyal to their kin, and while often peaceful, they can be a deadly fury.

Legio Arctos (pronounced LEG-io ARC-tose) is often simply referred to as the Legion, and its members, legionaries.

[edit] Philosophy

The primary philosophy of the legion is that this is a game. If you're not having fun, you're doing it wrong. Our primary objective is to fully enjoy ourselves. That can mean different things for different people, and so we try to be as open and flexible as possible.

Furthermore, we don't just want warm bodies. We want friends, comrades, compatriots. We want people who, even if the servers went down for a month, we would still enjoy talking to and spending time with.

The chain of command is very important and following orders is as well, but what truly holds an outfit together is what's held people together since the dawn of time. Our cro-magnon ancestors didn't have rigid ranks and hierarchy, and yet they still stuck together and still listened to their unofficial leader.

What held them together is quite simple: loyalty, love, friendship, trust, respect, and admiration. We want people who we might one day literally take a bullet for. Admittedly, a bullet that is really a tiny cloud of 1's and 0's, but still.

If, for whatever reason, someone joins and it doesn't work out, then no hard feelings, no worries, it happens. Once again, if you're not enjoying yourself, you're doing something wrong.

[edit] Playstyle

Simply put, the legion makes use of its small size. It relies much more on tactics, skills, planning, and flexibility than it does numbers. It's in no way uncommon for them to prevail, even when outnumbered three to one. This doesn't come easy, however.

Life as a guerrilla fighter isn't exactly glamorous. Patience, determination, concentration, and self control are tantamount. Sure, sometimes it can be boring, but it can also be massively rewarding. And that's at the worst of times.

Often, the outfit gets itself in to positions where there are no shortage of enemies, no means of escape, no guaranteed chance of success and just a fool's hope and a rousing speech to keep them going.

In terms of organization, the primary philosophy and practice is to reward and efficiently utilize the skills of the players. Even if a member isn't all that good in fighting, the legion finds what they ARE good at and encourages and allows them to focus on that.

Another core tenant of how the outfit is organized is the philosophy of autonomy and independence. The coordination of squads, platoons, and individuals is very important, but the one coordinating them can only be in one place at a time.

For this reason, all squad leaders and officers are trained to be flexible, fluid, and change their tactics and actions to suit their situations, not the orders of command. Each unit, be it an individual soldier, a squad, or an entire platoon, is in itself autonomous and independent.

The outfit is designed, more or less, like an amoeba. It may be separated, split in half, even shattered, but each little piece will still survive and in fact be its own independent organism.

[edit] Outfit Structure

Currently, due to changes to gameplay, inter-outfit structures and ideas, and all manner of things, the official structure is a work in progress. Currently there are six ranks and eight honorary titles.

[edit] Ranks

1 - Commander

2 - Major

3 - Captain

4 - Sergeant

5 - Corporal

6 - Contractor

Commander - The big man, the fellow in charge. The role of the commander is hard to define and changes constantly. Primarily, he's the main tactician and takes care of a lot of the organization. The current commander, Sylvanicus, believes in "leading by example". As he puts it, "The leader who leads from the rear, takes it in the rear." We're not sure what he's on about really, but he tends to be on the front line as much as possible.

Major - The major is the second in command. If the commander is absent, the major takes over as head of command. When the commander is around, the major's primary duties are acting as a go-between for the commander and the captains. The major makes sure things are getting done and takes care of a lot of organization as well. It is also their duty to take any disciplinary action if necessary.

Captain - The captains are the primary "on the ground" leaders. They are tasked with leading squad to platoon strength forces. Often each captain is tasked with a separate objective, but each objective in turn helps to achieve a greater one.

Sergeant - Below the captains, are the sergeants. They are the squad or fireteam leaders. The commander gives orders, the major makes sure the captains follow them, and finally the captains issue orders to the sergeants. The sergeants must then do their best to achieve their objectives given their various circumstances, which often involves the slight changing of their given orders.

Corporal - These are the common footsoldiers of the legion. That's hardly a fitting name, however. Each corporal is in fact a specialist in one or more fields. Before each mission, the corporals are chosen by their sergeants and/or captains based on their skills.

Contractor - When someone applies to the legion and are accepted, they become contractors. This acts as a sort of trial period. They are treated more or less as corporals. Instead of allowing the outfit to see if the person is right for them, it more functions in reverse. The contractor in question may get the feel for the outfit and if it doesn't work out, no hard feelings! If after a week they decide to stay, then they become corporals.

[edit] Honorary Titles

Gunnery Chief - This is a title given to esteemed friends of the outfit. Allied leaders and officers, or just skilled players. This title says that they have in whatever way won the admiration and respect of the outfit as a whole. In effect, it acts similar to being a captain. When running with the gunnery chief, they are treated by members of the outfit as if they were a captain.

Scoutmaster - This title is given to the best scout in the outfit, one who has proven themselves a master at their trade. This also comes with the duty of training other scouts who wish to learn.

Surgeon - The best medic in the outfit, one who has demonstrated an almost artistic ability to heal and revive their comrades and has displayed a good sense of triage. Like the Scoutmaster, they are tasked with training others who wish to learn.

Demolitions Expert - Another master specialist. One who has a great skill in the destruction of enemy armor, aircraft, emplacements, and troops. Tasked with training those who wish to learn the tricks of the trade.

Convoy Leader - Of all the legionaries, this is the best driver. Someone who can drive anything, and drive it well. Tasked with training those in need of or who want driving training.

Flight Admiral - Very similar to the convoy leader, with one exception. This individual does what the convoy leader does, but in the sky. Possibly one of the most valued titles, the best pilot in the outfit is given this and tasked with training others.

Technician - An individual who can repair a tank, even under fire, who knows just where to set up the turret, and where to hide that hunk of C4. Tasked with training others.

Centurion - The role of this individual is hard to define. They are the best, of all the legionaries, in combat. They can kill anyone, survive anything, wipe out an entire enemy squad. They are the master shock trooper and tasked with training others.

The combination of the seven master specialists is called "The Monkey Wrench Gang", as they tend to throw a monkey wrench in to the plans of anyone in their way.

[edit] Recruiting

Legio Arctos is currently recruiting. Skill level and class are not important, dedication, good humor, and respect for fellow members is all that is required. The various roles prospective members might find themselves in should they choose to join up are: driver, pilot, gunner, sniper, scout, medic, demolitions, mechanic, shocktrooper, tactician, and combatant.

[edit] Signature

A couple tactics and behaviors have somewhat become the signature of the group, even as early as it is for them. Primarily, their unorthodox tactic of fielding forces of flashes. Even when guns aren't mounted on the flashes, this can sometimes prove very difficult to counter due to their speed and maneuverability. "Hot dropping" has also become a bit of a signature tactic, wherein numerous light assault players eject from an aircraft simultaneously at high altitude to take an enemy below by surprise.

Overall, however, the group's main signature is small groups, stealth, and work behind enemy lines. Already they have proven themselves formidable opponents, even as just two man teams.

[edit] Contact

Commander Sylvanicus can be contacted in-game, on the PS2 forums hosted by SOE, and on the Planetside Universe forums, all under the same name.

The outfit as a whole or any member can be contacted via the outfit's official website.
