Wormhole

Wormholes are deeply embedded in Planetside lore. A wormhole first appears near Earth in March 16th, 2444. When this initial wormhole closed, it destabilized and destroyed the dwarf planet Pluto. Planetside lore is unclear whether this was caused by aliens or the wormhole itself. 98.3 years later the wormhole opens again this time it does not destroy anything. After discovering an alien artifact in the Moon Belt, Tom Connery proposes an expedition through the wormhole to discover more. When the expedition eventually leaves the home solar system through the wormhole, it destabilizes and destroys half the fleet. The expedition is then stranded in an unknown area of the universe, unable to return home for another 98.3 years when the wormhole opens again.
